project description

The Summit is a world class facility specializing in the treatment and research of child and adolescent mental health. At the time of its planning and construction, no other facility in the world offered the combination of services, including a no appointment necessary walk-in service, intensive treatment, day hospital, and flex clinic offering a rotating assortment of complementary sexual health and TMS research professionals.

The building design is the result of many months and years of engagement with youth and family advisory committees, stakeholder meetings, as well as extensive facility tours across North America and Australia. The youth advisors, many of whom had navigated the ill-equipped mental healthcare system of the past, were adamant that the building have a distinctly non-clinical feel.

The building includes many innovations for a healthcare facility, including the use of exposed CLT structure and chilled beam heating/cooling systems.

The building was funded 100% by the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation and is operated by Alberta Health Services.

Serendipitously, while acting as the Project Architect, Lee Miller contracted the services of Jason Lenders to lead the development of the Construction Documents - a successful collaboration and the genesis of what would later become MILE architecture.
