project description

The College of the Rockies needed to double the space for their successful Trades and Technology program while also consolidating programs that were spread over several campuses in the Kootenay region.

As part of the design stage, over 500 pieces of FF&E and specialized equipment were itemized and catalogued, which were later relocated to the new facility during extensive facility planning sessions.

The building was carefully designed to incorporate polycarbonate panels into the IMP cladding to provide an abundance of natural light into the normally dark and industrial teaching spaces, and classrooms are provided break-out spaces which overlook the shop to maintain a connection between the different parts of the facility.

Recognizing a regional indigenous vernacular, a cordwood masonry facade is incorporated as a feature of the main building elevation.
